East Tennessee Farmers’ Association for Retail Marketing is a 32 years young nonprofit corporation owned exclusively by its farmer-gardener members.  Although it receives competitive grants for advertising from the Tennessee Agricultural Enhancement Program, the Association, which goes by the acronym F.A.R.M., receives no direct support from any municipal, county, or state governmental entity.  Despite that FARM operates four markets a week in the Knoxville area where its members sell their produce and value added food products.  In fact, FARM is believed to be largest and most successful freestanding farmers’ market organization in the state.

Since its beginning in 1976 FARM has held to the purposes for which it was formed: Encourage, promote, and develop all phases of farming; Provide members facilities and services to market their products; Provide consumers with a market where they can buy directly from FARM members; Publicize the availability of farm products to the consumer; Promote cooperation between farmers; Educate producers about alternative cultural practices and marketing alternatives involving value added activities; Encourage young people to consider farming; Promote and sponsor types of activities that better the agricultural sector of our society.

To the latter end, FARM partners with other organizations to sponsor and produce activities that benefit both associations, Breakfast with the Farmer’s Market, and the Lavender Festival to name a couple. That FARM has consistently moved to achieve these purposes is shown by the fact that a sizable percentage of members have been selling at the markets for ten years or more.  Three members have been selling for at least twenty years.  One of the original incorporators is still actively selling at the markets.

FARM markets enjoy an ever-growing base of satisfied customers.  For the 2007 marketing year FARM markets had gross receipts of over $342,500.  FARM’s markets provide an experience for their patrons, not simply an opportunity to buy fresh locally grown food.  Patrons have an opportunity to become a part of the growing backlash against corporate food production, processing and distribution.  FARM is bent on supporting sustainable agricultural practices that value all uses of the lands entrusted to its members.

FARM is always looking for producers who are dedicated to providing quality produce and value added products to the public at a fair price.  If you would like to explore the possibility of a farm membership, please tour our Membership page, read the requirements and rules.  If you can meet them please download the Membership Application, complete it, and forward with the appropriate payments, as well as copies of any certifications and inspection reports required, to the Secretary-Treasurer.

We invite you to visit our site often.  We intend to make it a valuable source of information to each visitor.
